The last blog post covered the hint of an Enterprise Gateway for Power BI. With the recent release, we have the official Power BI gateway.

Features include the ability to direct query the On-Premise SQL Database through the Enterprise Gateway and Azure Service Bus.  As you would expect the enterprise gateway has enhanced security by leveraging the service.

So basically unless you want to use Direct Query to an on-premise SQL you don’t really need the Enterprise Gateway.
