Microsoft recently published their Business Intelligence BI Roadmap. One of the more interesting announcements was a one liner in their multi-page release that indicated they have a forthcoming “enterprise gateway” to compliment their existing Personal Gateway.
Unfortunately those are all the details that we have at this point. However the current limitations of the Personal PowerBI Gateway are that you can only sync up to 6 times during the course of a day. In addition – the loads through the personal gateway require a full refresh of data each time without the support for incremental loads. Finally the personal gateway runs off a user account and unless you are logging in with an administrator account which means you must be logged into your computer for it to sync. If you do have an admin access to the machine you can run the personal gateway as a service.
It’s exciting to think of the possibilities this may bring to a more robust data sync between PowerBI and on premise data in hybrid scenarios.
